Google Business Profile holiday hours are the one profile field with a hard deadline this month. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, and the stretch to New Year's is when furnaces fail, pipes freeze and a cracked tooth cannot wait. If your profile says "Open" and nobody answers, you lose the call and the review that follows.
This post shows how to set special hours, how to show an after-hours emergency line honestly, and what to put on your website so both agree. It sits under our local SEO for home service businesses checklist for South Jersey, which flags hours mismatches as a named risk for dental offices. Here is the fix.
What special hours do, and what they do not
Special hours are dated overrides to your regular weekly hours. According to Google Business Profile Help, you can use them when your business temporarily adjusts its hours or stays closed for up to six days in a row. Holidays, events and other exceptional circumstances all qualify.
Three details from that same help page matter for a small office:
- Your main hours must be set to "Open with main hours." Google says special hours will not show on the profile otherwise.
- Confirm holidays even when nothing changes. Google recommends confirming hours for official holidays even if they match your regular hours, so customers see that the hours are accurate.
- One date can hold more than one block. If you close from noon to 2 PM and reopen, add a second set of hours to that date.
Google also says that on certain holidays a warning may appear on your Business Profile telling people your hours might differ. That warning is a prompt to set special hours in advance. It is not a substitute for them.
Special hours change what the profile shows. They do not answer your phone, route a call or tell a customer how to reach an on-call technician. That is the next problem.
The dates to set for Thanksgiving through New Year's 2027
Open the profile, choose Edit profile, then Hours, then the pencil next to Special hours. Google's help page says you can accept a suggested date by choosing Review or add your own date. If you manage more than a few locations, the same page describes a bulk upload spreadsheet with a Special hours column. Dates go in as year-month-day, with an "x" for an all-day closure.
| Date | Day | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| November 26, 2026 | Thursday | Thanksgiving: closed, or emergency line only? |
| November 27, 2026 | Friday | Many offices run short hours or close. Decide and enter it. |
| December 24, 2026 | Thursday | Early close? Set the exact closing time. |
| December 25, 2026 | Friday | Closed, or emergency line only? |
| December 31, 2026 | Thursday | Early close? Staff coverage for the evening? |
| January 1, 2027 | Friday | New Year's Day: closed, or emergency line only? |
If your office closes for a longer block, such as December 24 through January 1, that is nine days. The six-day limit Google states means you will need to check how the profile handles it. We have not tested what the profile displays for a block that long, so look at the live listing on a phone after you save.
The weekday matters here. Christmas and New Year's both land on a Friday this year, so a Thursday-to-Monday gap is easy to create by accident. Write the hours down first, then enter them.
After-hours emergency lines for HVAC and plumbing
A heating or plumbing emergency does not follow the calendar. The question is how to be truthful about two different things: when the office is staffed, and when someone will pick up an emergency call.
Keep office hours and emergency coverage separate
Do not list your profile as open all night if the phone goes to a voicemail that someone checks at 7 AM. A customer with water coming through a ceiling reads "open" as "someone will answer." When nobody does, the next stop is the competitor above or below you in the map results.
Instead, keep the profile hours as the hours the office is staffed. Then state the emergency path in the places Google lets you write words: the business description, a profile post, and the website the profile links to. Say what counts as an emergency, what number to call, and what the caller should expect, such as a callback within a stated window. Only state a window you can meet.
What we have not confirmed
Google's help pages describe a "More hours" setting for specific services with different times, such as senior hours or delivery and takeout. We have not confirmed that an emergency-service option is offered for every HVAC or plumbing category, and options vary by category. Check your own dashboard before planning around it. Also check whether your profile accepts a second phone number, and which number a mobile "Call" button dials.
Where your dispatch happens matters more than the profile field. In the HVAC and plumbing CRM we build, calls, dispatch and equipment history live in one system. That makes it practical to hold one record of on-call hours instead of retyping them in five places. It is an option we scope per business, not something your current setup does by default.
After-hours emergencies at a dental office
Dental offices have a different problem. The front desk is closed, but a patient with a swollen face or a knocked-out tooth still searches "emergency dentist near me" at 9 PM on Christmas Eve.
What the message says is a clinical decision, so your dentist or practice owner writes it. Our job is to make sure it appears consistently. A workable structure has three parts:
- The office hours on the profile, with each holiday set as special hours.
- A voicemail greeting that names the holiday closure and gives the on-call or emergency instruction your practice has decided on.
- The same instruction, in the same words, on a dedicated website page that the profile links to.
That consistency is the point. A patient who sees "closed Friday" on Google and "open 8 to 4" on the site will either trust the wrong one or trust neither. For the patient side of this, the dental CRM we build ties scheduling, recall and staff tasks together. We can also scope the same hours record to drive a reminder text saying the office is closed that week.
Make the website agree with the profile
We cannot show you a ranking effect from matching hours, and we will not claim one. The practical case is simpler: customers see both the profile and the site, and conflicting hours cost you calls.
Check each of these places on the site:
- Header or footer. Many sites hard-code weekly hours here. Holiday exceptions rarely get added.
- Contact page. Add a dated holiday notice at the top, with the exact dates and times.
- Emergency or "same-day service" page. State the emergency number and what it covers.
- Structured data. Many sites carry a block of code, called LocalBusiness markup, that lists opening hours for search engines. If yours does, it will still show regular hours during the holidays unless someone updates it.
- Site-wide banner. A short notice such as "Closed November 26–27. Emergency line: [your number]" is enough.
- Online booking and forms. If a form promises a callback "within the hour," change that line for the holiday.
Then look at everything else that repeats your hours: Facebook, Apple Maps, Yelp, your email signature and your phone system's greeting. The profile is only one of the places a customer might read your hours.
The wider list of profile fields to check, beyond hours, is in our year-end Google Business Profile audit.
A dated plan you can finish this week
Treat your Google Business Profile holiday hours as a short task list with owners. The operator who answers the phones should own it, not whoever last touched the website.
- Now: decide the hours for each date in the table above and write them in one document. Get the owner's sign-off.
- Before Thanksgiving: enter special hours on the profile. Update the voicemail and phone-tree greeting. Add the website banner.
- Before December 24: confirm who carries the emergency phone each night and that the number works. Make a test call from a mobile phone, not the office line.
- After you save: view the listing on your own phone, logged out, and compare it with the website.
- Early January: remove expired special hours and the website banner. Check for suggested edits that customers or Google may have proposed.
The test call is the step most offices skip. Forwarding rules often break when the person who set them up is off for the holiday.
We do not know how quickly any given edit will appear for searchers, so do not wait until the afternoon of the 25th. The Google help pages we reviewed on November 8, 2026 do not state a publishing timeline.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set Google Business Profile holiday hours?
Open your profile, choose Edit profile, then Hours, and select the pencil beside Special hours. Pick a suggested holiday or add a date, then either mark it closed or enter open and close times. Google's help page says your main hours must be set to "Open with main hours" for special hours to appear.
Should I set special hours if my holiday hours match my regular hours?
Yes. Google's help page recommends confirming hours for official holidays even when they match your regular hours, because it tells customers the hours are accurate. Google may also show a notice that hours might differ on certain holidays, so a confirmed entry removes the guesswork for anyone checking your listing that day.
Can I show an emergency line on my profile for after-hours HVAC or plumbing calls?
Keep profile hours as your staffed office hours, then state the emergency number and what it covers in the business description, a profile post and on your website. Google's "More hours" setting is documented for services with different times, such as delivery, but availability depends on your category. Check your dashboard before relying on it.
What happens if my website hours and Google Business Profile hours don't match?
Customers see two answers and choose one, often the wrong one. We cannot point to a measured ranking penalty, so we do not claim one. The cost is practical: missed calls, patients arriving at a closed door and frustrated reviews. Update the profile, site banner, voicemail and other listings from one written hours sheet.
Get the hours right before Thanksgiving
