The Double Standard Press

“All the News, Reprinted to Fit.”

A fully automated daily newspaper where every story is real political news rewritten with the parties swapped — then it asks readers, before revealing the swap, whether they're outraged. Built end to end by iOLab Digital: research, writing, image generation, and a whole-site rebuild, one command a day.

The Concept

Outrage is often about who did it, not what they did

The same action can read as a scandal or a shrug depending on the actor's party. Most people would nod along to that in the abstract — but it's hard to feel without a controlled comparison.

The Press turns the premise into an experiment instead of an assertion: it takes real, sourced news, rewrites it with the actor's party flipped (balanced roughly evenly across every edition), and asks the reader to vote before learning which version they saw. The gap between the two reactions is the actual product — a measured number, not a punchline.

The Daily Pipeline

Yesterday's paper to today's paper — one command

A single /press-edition run takes the site from empty to shipped.

01

Research

WebSearch the day's real political coverage across desks; balance flip targets both directions.

02

Write

10–14 original articles as structured JSON — real actor, flipped actor, body, verdict, and a verified source URL.

03

Images

Gemini generates one photorealistic press photo per story — literalized metaphor, no recognizable faces or legible text.

04

Sync + Build

Mirror JSON into the Press DB, roll up votes, then a stdlib-only Python generator rebuilds every page ever published.

05

Ship

Commit + push; DigitalOcean auto-deploys; post-deploy checks confirm the front page, articles, and archive are live.

The Centerpiece

A site that runs a live experiment on itself

The Outrage Meter isn't a decorative gag — it's a genuine blind A/B test baked into every page, turning the paper's own premise into a falsifiable number.

Blind 75 / 25 assignment
Each reader is randomly served the flipped name (75%) or the real name (25%), rendered in neutral styling so the variant can't be guessed before the vote.
Vote before the reveal
Readers answer “outraged?” before either name is disclosed, then see who actually said it and answer again — a before/after pair per reader.
A measured Outrage Index
Votes roll up per edition into the gap between outrage-at-the-flip and outrage-at-the-fact — with an honest “still tallying” label until there's enough data to compute the real number.

A content mirror keeps the git-committed JSON as the sole source of truth (an auditable history of every edition), while a dedicated Postgres database exists purely as a fast-read rollup for the meter and a duplicate-topic guard.

The Press Photos

A custom AI wire-photo desk

Every story gets a photorealistic “press photo” from a Gemini pipeline — the joke literalized in the staged scene, never in a recognizable face or legible text. Each batch is reviewed on a contact sheet before it ships.

The Feature Tour

Built like a real paper, run like a machine

The flip mechanic

Every article is original prose built around one named actor swapped for an opposite-party equivalent of matching stature — President↔President, Governor↔Governor — balanced per edition.

The Receipts

Every article links the real coverage it was rewritten from, directly beneath the satire. No receipt, no article — a hard rule.

The Outrage Meter

A live, blind A/B experiment on every page: readers are randomly served the flipped or the real name, vote before either is revealed, then see who actually said it.

Whole-corpus rebuild

Every run regenerates prev/next chains, related blocks, canonical/OG/JSON-LD, the archive, and the sitemap across the entire history — not just the newest edition.

Share the Flip

A share bar on every article (X, Facebook, Reddit, Bluesky, Threads, WhatsApp, email, copy) with a live shared-count.

Editor's Summons

A newsprint-styled 6 AM ET reminder email that nudges the daily publish run and auto-skips once the edition is already live.

The Look

Blackletter masthead (UnifrakturMaguntia), Old Standard TT headlines, and a Courier Prime teletype voice for bylines and meta. One quiet rule governs color: color marks a real, revealed actor; black ink is the fiction.
